José Damasceno (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1968) attended

architecture at Faculdade Santa Úrsula and classes at EAV (School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage). In the 90's Damasceno began his artistic career and over the years developed a set of heterogeneous works.

Through displacement, repetition, accumulation and subtraction, he skillfully brings together the notions of Surrealism, Arte povera and Minimalism, addressing in his works impermanence, representation, scale, space and movement.

He held solo shows at Santander Cultural, Porto Alegre, RS (2015); Holborn Library, London, UK; Casa França-Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, RJ (2014); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain (2008), among others.  

He represented Brazil with Viagem à Lua at the Venice Biennale in 2007; participated in the Sydney Biennale, Sydney, Australia (2006); L'Esperienza dell'Arte at the Venice Biennale, Italy (2005); Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, RS (2003); and the 25th Bienal de São Paulo, SP (2002), in addition to group exhibitions at the Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona, USA (2017); at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA (2014); Center Pompidou, Paris, France (2008), among others.

The artist's work is part of permanent collections around the world such as Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami, USA; Daros Latinoamerica AG, Zurich, Switzerland; Inhotim Contemporary Art Center, Brumadinho, MG; Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, SP; Museo d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, ​​Barcelona, ​​Spain; and Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA.
