Victor Arruda

"Known for his rough, crude, uncompromising painting, with a fierce criticism against hypocrisy and abuse of power, and the presence, since always, of gender issues, with explicit sex scenes."

Victor Arruda (Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, 1947), one of the great names in contemporary art, moved to Rio when he was 14 years old. He graduated in museology at UniRio, specializing in contemporary art.

The artist is known for his rough, crude, uncompromising painting, with a fierce criticism against hypocrisy and abuse of power, and the presence, since always, of gender issues, with explicit sex scenes. For the artist, his art is conceptual, in which “pornography” (“in quotation marks”, he points out) and aggressiveness are at the service of the discussion of internal as well as social issues.

His works are in important collections such as those of Gilberto Chateaubriand, Luiz Schymura, João Sattamini, Hélio Portocarrero and that of the Italian critic Achille Bonito Oliva (1939), who learned about his work through the artist Antonio Dias (1944).
